NAAFS Kickboxing 2012

If you are a fan of stand up action, heavy hitting and devastating knockouts, then get ready for this January as Ryan "The Lion" Madigan of Evolve MMA in conjunction with the NAAFS will be showcasing a night of kickboxing action in Akron that will be sure to please fight fans throughout northeast Ohio.

And GR fans should especially be psyched to hear that we have three amateurs of our fight team returning to the ring in early 2012.

With Anton Jackson, a vicious combination of power and rhythm that hasn't been seen in the heavyweight division for quite some time. Kevin Peterson, a former workhorse of the light-heavyweight division looking to move up in weight and play with the big boys. And Ryan Lose, the featherweight with a fierce determination to showcase his ever-improving stand-up.

These three along with their coach Jason "Dynamite" Dent (making his professional kickboxing debut against Kyle "Kyote" Rozewski) will be in action in an exciting event to start the year off with a bang.

GR Intra Grappling Challenge

Attention members! It's official GR is hosting an intra-academy grappling tournament on Saturday November 19th. We held a grappling tournament over a year ago with tremendous success and look forward to another successful tournament. We are putting the event together as we speak. There are a few items we can say for sure at this time: 1--The tournament will be limited to GriffonRawl members ONLY! It's a chance for our school to pull ourselves to a higher level of grappling, but is not an event pitting academy vs. academy. 2--The tournament will be a NO-GI event. 3--There will be a small fee of $10ea for the event if you pre-register or it will be $15 if you wait to pay the day of. 4--Weigh-ins will be held the day of the event. 5--Weight classes will be determined the day of the event based on the number of participants and the range of weights based on said participants. 6--The tournament will be double elimination ensuring everyone at least two matches.
Stay tuned for further information! We plan to award all 1st place winners of each division with an engraved trophy. Any and all extra funds that are made will be put towards buying GR a new Muay Thai heavy bag. Should be an excite event. Please pre-register and sign up in advance and save $5 dollars.

GR set for NAAFS "Rock & Rumble 5"

GR has 5 guys set to compete on Saturday August 27th, at the Nautica Pavilion. GR fighters are as follows Paul "Str8 Outta" Compton, George "BoneSaw" Comer, Reggie "The Contract Killer" Parks, Ryan "The Loose Canyon" Lose, and last but not least John Burbol. Compton & Comer's fights will be Proffessional bouts and everyone else's is amateur. Please if you plan to attend get your tickets through the fighters as they have them as well as posters if you would like some. If you are unable to attend at least make sure to wish them good luck next time you see them here in the gym.

On Saturday, December 4, 2010, two of Griffonrawl's warriors will enter the cage at the historic Gray's Armory in Cleveland, Ohio with each having the chance to make NAAFS history!
Donny 'Eagle Eye' Walker looks to be the first NAAFS professional to successfully defend his belt. No champion, regardless of weight class, has done so. Donny will be taking on the rising star, Billy Vaugh who is coming of three successful wins and called for his shot at the title in Columbus in September.
'Bonesaw' George Comer looks to be the first amateur to win NAAFS titles in successive years, but George has an even more unique opportunity than simply repeating as champion. Griffonrawl Victory Celebration!

GriffonRawl MMA Academy, in conjunction with Intimidation Clothing, will be hosting a team celebration party this coming Wednesday night, September 15,2010. We will be celebrating the success of the GR fighters in the last four fight shows we have competed in. Team GriffonRawl has gone 8-2 displaying all of their hard work and training.

Relson Gracie "Seminar"

GriffonRawl MMA Academy, in conjuction with the Lake County Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Association, is pleased to announce a seminar led by Master Relson Gracie on Sunday, September 12, 2010 from 11am to 1pm at the GriffonRawl MMA Academy in Mentor, Ohio. Gi, no-gi, and MMA techniques will be covered. Proper training attire is expected.

Relson is the second eldest son of the late Grandmaster Helio Gracie. He began learning jiu-jitsu at the tender age of two and was competing by age ten. He reigned as Brazilian National Champion for 22 consecutive years and was entirely undefeated during this period. His popularity grew, and he soon became known to many as “Campeao,” or “Champion.” In 1988, Relson moved to Hawaii to introduce Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to the Aloha State. This is the only time Relson will be at the academy this year, so its an opportunity you will not want to miss.

GriffonRawl Jr. MMA Day Camp is for all kids between the ages of 7 and 14.
We will offer specialized instruction in various Martial Art techniques taught by Four time UFC Fighter and Ultimate Fighter Jason “Dynamite” Dent and other Professional and Amateur fighters from the Academy. This program is designed to teach your child important life skills such as focus, confidence, teamwork, discipline, fitness and self-defense. We will place a strong emphasis on thinking first and fighting as a last resort for defense only.
We will participate in traditional day camp activities such as relay races, dodge ball, and other team building games to promote teamwork. We'll provide drinks for the day; you will need to bring a healthy lunch. Our staff is highly qualified and loves working with kids. Positive reinforcement and validation are values we have instilled in our staff and will promote in your children.
We offer Early drop off at 8:30am. You may book by the week or the day. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today!

Jr. MMA Day Camp Schedule
*Each day will begin with a series of warm-ups and stretches as well as a light group run.

*We will end each day with various games including dodge ball and PS3. The only PS3 games that will be permitted will be UFC Undisputed 2010 and Fight Night Round 4.

*Jason Dent will be conducting all of the classes as well as other GR instructors and professional GR fighters.

Monday – Boxing will be the art of the day. We will be covering everything from footwork, head movement, proper technique on the six basic punches, putting together combinations, how to use the speed and heavy bags and last but not least some controlled sparing.

Tuesday – Muay Thai will be the art of the day. We will be covering everything from footwork, head movement, blocking, proper techniques for throwing kicks, knees, elbows, and punches, sparing combinations, the use of thai pads and thai bags and last but not least some controlled sparing.

Wednesday – Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will be the art of the day. Students will not be required to wear a Gi; however we will be going over the benefits of training with a Gi. We will be covering everything from positioning, guard recovery, transitioning, submission offense, submission defense, and last but not least some controlled free rolling.

Thursday – Judo/Wrestling will be the arts of the day. We will be covering all kinds of takedowns, as well as take down defenses. We will teach students how to get and defend takedowns both using a cage and out in the open.

Friday – MMA will be the focus of the day. We will be primarily
focusing on how to put all of the arts we have been studying together
effectively. We will be evaluating GR fight team footage both Pro and
amateur and breaking down the action in detail. If the students are not
too sore at this point in the week we will vote on whether to free roll or
spar. We will provide a pizza lunch on Friday to celebrate everyone’s
hard work. We will also be having a water balloon fight so come
prepared to get wet.

NAAFS "War on the Shore 4"

The NAAFS returns to Geneva, Ohio for exciting MMA action at The Cove in Geneva for "the summers biggest bash." Griffonrawl has traditionally been well represented at this event, and 2010 is no exception.

The card is highlighted by two undefeated men squaring off in the lightweight division. The 2009 NAAFS Amateur Lightweight Champion, George Comer leads a contingent of Griffonrawl warriors. George is fighting Al Pacosky in the main event of the evening. Also on the card is George Murphy (135lbs) and Nick Albrecht (145lbs) who are making their MMA debuts. Veterans John Burbol (185lbs), Dan Farnworth (145lbs), and Matt Hopkins (170lbs) are also slated for action.

Robin Geisler Jiu-Jitsu Seminar

Robin Geisler began his study of Grace Jiu-Jitsu in 1994 and has competed internationally since then, culminating in a 2nd place at the 2008 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championships. He runs the Relson Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in Columbus and will be at GriffonRawl for a three hour No-gi and Gi seminar. He is one of the first men in Ohio to receive his blackbelt directly from Relson Gracie.

The seminar will be comprised of two, 1.5 hour seminars, the first being advanced No-Gi techniques (covering submission defenses and attacks) and the second being advanced Gi techniques (chokes, passes, defense in the guard). You may attend either one or BOTH.

On Thursday, August 27, 2009, MMA and Muay Thai classes will be cancelled at the GriffonRawl MMA Academy in order to host an exclusive seminar with Jeff "The Snowman" Monson.

Jeff's creditials are impressive to say the least. A two time Abu Dhabi champion, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, Division I college wrestler, nearly forty professional MMA bouts and one of the most feared grapplers in the world are just a few of his accomplishments. He now trains with American Top Team.

Pre-registration is encouraged but not mandatory. Please arrive at 6:00pm for individual stretching and warm-ups. Appropriate training gear will be needed including cup, mouthpiece, MMA gloves, etc.... The seminar will cover takedowns, submissions, and many other aspects of MMA. Professionals AJ Pulling and Paul Compton, along with amateurs Bryon McCroskey and John Strmac will be in MMA action on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the beautiful Nautica Pavilion in "The Flats." Rock N Rumble 3 is one of the biggest events the NAAFS has put together as the show will be headlined by MMA legend Jeff "The Snowman" Monson.

John Strmac will be making his debut at 135lbs, dropping from 145lbs, to take on #1 ranked Sean Barnett. This will be a battle of the "ages" as John recently turned 35 years old, and Sean is an 18 year old phenom.

Bryon McCroskey (170lbs) will be taking on highly touted Okey Lawrence. Both men sport a 5-2 MMA record and neither have shyed away from top competiton in their amateur careers. Bryon looks to cement his place in the national semifinals with a win.

Paul "Str8outta" Compton will be in featherweight action as he takes on submission specialit Brandon Hance of USA Martial Arts. This fight pits two amazing athletes able to keep an amazing pace for 3, 5 minute rounds.

Mainstay AJ "Bloodbath" pulling gets back into the NAAFS Cage as he takes on Team H2O's captain Mickey Hughes. Both have had outstanding amateur careers and have two pro fights under their belt. AJ looks to remain unbeaten as a professional.

Christmas celebrations will be a little different this year at GriffonRawl. In place of our regular Christmas party at the school, we will be going as a group to a showing of "Rocky Balboa 6". We are all going to try to meet at the theatre around 7:30ish as the movie starts at 7:50. I made sure to make sure we were going to be going to the showing that takes place in one of their larger showing rooms.After the movie, we will all have dinner at Red Robyn, which is right next door to the Theatre. I called the restaurant and they would like it if we are all there by no later then like 9:45. They normally close at 10pm and are movie is 1 hour and 42 minutes long which makes it a tight fit but we will make it work. Red Robyn has no problem with us being there they would just like us seated and to have are orders placed before closing time. Wow this should be an action packed weekend as I will be flying back from NYC where we already have three of our team members fighting Friday night to corner four more of our guys Saturday night. To start with we have Silas Maynard making his debut while Dave Osborne will be making his return. The Northcoast Showdown will take place this September 16th in Euclid, Ohio’s Euclid Sportsplant. “This round will likely be the most competitive of the series so far.” said NAAFS spokesman Jake Digman. “We are a few months away from the year end finals which has made the next few events that much more important to the fighters trying to earn a slot in December. We are expecting the September 16th card to be one of our most competitive and evenly matched cards of 2006.” Headlining the show will be two of the NAAFS’ premier heavyweights as Josh “The Sandman” Stansbury (3-1) battles local favorite an unbeaten in two fights, Dominic Qurazzo. In addition, top ranked welterweight “Smokin” Joe Heiland returns to the series looking for his fifth straight NAAFS win.Lightweight Dustin “The Reaper” Kempf (7-1) and Dan Spohn (3-0) will also look to stay on top of their respective divisions as part of four current number one seeds that will be entering the NAAFS cage on September 16th. Round six is tentatively set for November 11th and will feature the NAAFS Team Challenge along with a few amateur super-fights. Information on this event will be released soon on PKW.
